Background
NATO enlargement has been a topic for discussion for more than two decades since the Alliance in June 1990 decided to ‘stretch out the hand of friendship’ to start a process that fundamentally changed the Alliance, NATO’s partners and prospective new members and perhaps also the geo-political landscape and relationship with Russia.
The seminar will investigate what has been achieved by the enlargement process and perhaps more importantly what might still be achieved and what some of the unforeseen consequences of NATO’s enlargement have been. Moreover, the seminar will ask what the future holds for a continuation of NATO’s enlargement and partnership policy, especially for those countries that are still waiting to become members.
The seminar will end with a launch of the book by Mira Krajacik The Day After: The Future of NATO Enlargement: Shifting Strategies, or Shifting Russia? The book is published with support from the Norwegian Embassy in the Republic of Macedonia.
