Laboratorium -

Laboratorium: Russian Review of Social Research is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal produced by an international group of scholars. The journal comes out three times a year and publishes materials based on empirical qualitative social research in Russian and English.

  1. This thematic issue of the journal resulted from an international conference “Aging in Cross-Cultural Perspective” that took place in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on December 14–15, 2018. Organized by Maija Könönen, Professor at the University of Helsinki, and Julia Zelikova, Associate Professor at the North-West Institute of Management of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, the conference was based on the project “Between the Normal and the Abnormal: Cultural Meanings of Dementia and Old Age in Finland and Russia,” sponsored by the Kone Foundation and carried out in 2017–2019. Conference discussions shed light on the potential of a cross-cultural approach to aging in diverse sociocultural contexts and made normativity the focal point of the issue of aging.

  2. The essay presents an analysis of the interviews and life history of an informant diagnosed with dementia. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of the sociologist’s work with such material, which, unlike most interviews, is “irrational,” full of semantic failures and contradictions. The usual methods of sociological analysis and interpretation are powerless in such cases, and the researcher needs a fundamentally different approach to the material in order to break through unusual reflections and time collisions and to get closer to understanding the informant. This essay is based on the material collected in the framework of the Oxford Russia Fellowship program in a rural nursing home in one of the regions of Russia and examines peculiarities of conducting and analyzing interviews with an informant diagnosed with dementia. Furthermore, the author reflects on what the researcher ought to do to find “semantic hints”—connecting bridges between the past and present in the informant’s narrative.

  4. The concept of aging has quite contradictory characteristics and interpretations in the academic literature. The most developed are biological (gerontological), chronological, and sociological approaches. In the social sciences the phenomenon of aging has a complex structure—it cannot be studied outside the social, cultural, and historical factors existing in a particular society.
Following the notion of social construction of aging, I believe that in order to analyze aging and old age not only as socially constructed phenomena but as individual strategies and practices, we must investigate how individuals themselves subjectively explain their age and actions related to it and how they present their own discourse of aging and perception of age-related changes. According to the adopted methodological framework, narrative interviews with informants aged 63 to 83 years became the main method of collecting data for this study.
As the results of the study demonstrate, individuals who by the criteria of age are assigned to the category of the “elderly” manifest an ambivalent attitude toward the process of aging. Assessing the current period of their life, informants associate it with wisdom, experience, and the possibility of self-realization, including in those areas where before they could not prove themselves due to the burden of professional and family responsibilities.
Advanced age is characterized by informants, first of all, as a time of assessing one’s life, summing up its results, while the number of years lived is perceived rather as a given that has only a formal meaning but does not directly affect their inner sense of self. Informants who continue working see it as an opportunity to remain useful, in demand, rather than purely as a source of (albeit not unimportant) additional income. The main things that the elderly value, as the study revealed, are self-satisfaction, family, health, having friends, and various kinds of activities (labor, civic, or family) that allow them to feel needed.

  5. This article explores the normative understandings of older adults, old age, and aging as they are articulated in the mainstream media’s discourse on “successful aging” and “active longevity” in contemporary Russia. I draw on critical gerontological approach and critical discourse analysis to examine the articles published in 2016–2018 in one of the most popular Russian weekly newspapers, Argumenty i Fakty (Arguments and Facts), which actively engages in discussions of “activity,” “longevity,” and “success” in later life. This article traces the consumerist logic behind the “successful aging” discourse, which takes the notion of “success” as a matter of lifestyle that can be maintained through individual’s voluntary reflexive participation in consumerist practices and, thus, ignores the social-structural factors affecting this process. The aging subject is invited to engage with the “successful aging” ideal and express their “reflexive” self through the practices of “managing” health and longevity, appearance and embodiment, and manifestations of sexuality. However, this “successful” management suggests a correlation with the conventional perceptions of femininity, masculinity, and sexuality, subjectivity buttressed with neoliberal values, and familial life in which the aging subject must remain a resource for younger generations. This analysis indicates that such standards exclude those life trajectories that do not comply with the norms of the discourses on aging in an “active” and “successful” way.

  6. The article presents results of the study of self-representation by two religious organizations
in Saint Petersburg, Russia, that provide long-term elderly care. The main aim of the research is to reconstruct how faith-based organizations represent, or position, themselves in the conditions of expansion of the market of nonstate social services in Russia. The study was conducted within the qualitative paradigm of social research and used frame analysis as its main methodological tool. The study analyzed framing used in several dozens of the two organizations’ written texts, such as their official documents, news items, recommendations, leaflets, social media entries, and contents on their official webpages. Following the consensus existing in critical scholarship on the third sector professionalization, the main hypothesis of this study is that at the level of self-representation religious organizations readily abandon their original identity and values of spiritual concern and care for their charges, instead positioning themselves primarily as “experts.” In the course of the study, three main frames were identified: religious “patience,” aligned with the original mission and identity of the organizations; “humanism,” popular among the medical geriatric community; and “professionalization,” which implies self-positioning as experts. The analysis revealed that discourses of “patience” and “humanism” are used relatively rarely, be it at the level of caregivers or in the organizations’ statutory documents. In turn, “professionalization” was the most common type of self-representation, proving the study’s main hypothesis to be correct.

  7. The article examines the practices of “dense care,” intensive long-term care for elderly relatives with dementia. Family care is conceptualized as a moral career of care, which makes it possible to detect changes in the status and identity of the relative during the care process. Drawing on in-depth interviews with relatives and materials of participant observation, we analyze main characteristics of daily care, problems faced by relatives, institutional interactions, drawbacks and positive aspects of this form of domestic work. Caregivers evaluate their work ambivalently, according to cultural models of proper care and moral duty. This study shows that family care remains a cultural norm in the Russian context. The practices of care are being modernized and the burden on caregivers is increasing, but this work does not receive sufficient institutional support. The moral career of care can become more humane with the development of a system of social care and support to relatives caring for elderly people in need of close care.

  8. The dominant discourse in contemporary Russian society judges aging as a person’s defeat and defines success as the ability to hide the physical and bodily signs of one’s age. Old age is often constituted in public consciousness as the age of decline—decline in learning abilities, physical attractiveness, desires, activity, and so on. Social norms that restrict the behavior of older people should be defined as ageism. Resistance to ageism, in other words resistance to restrictive social constructs, is essential for subjective well-being of older people.
The purpose of this article is to consider aging in contemporary Russia as a complex phenomenon that consists of certain rules and practices. Is it possible to resist the negative discourse of aging associated with decline? What would aging look like if it was possible to at least partially free ourselves from negative social beliefs about age?
This research was carried out within a qualitative paradigm. The empirical material is based on 18 in-depth narrative interviews with 10 women and 8 men aged between 60 and 86. The results of the study reveal that existing norms and rules of aging in Russian society are related to the exclusion of older people from the public sphere and discrimination in the private sphere: they restrict the capacities of older people, deny their agency in determining their own goals and abilities to act in their own interest. Older people interiorize these norms and rules, and this leads to self-discrimination and perpetuation of ageism.

  9. Ageing and Digital Technology: Designing and Evaluating Emerging Technologies for Older Adults, edited by Barbara Barbosa Neves and Frank Vetere, is a collection of 18 papers that describe the complexity of research and praxis of information and communication technologies co-design, implementation, evaluation, acceptance, and use by older adults. The book acknowledges the worldwide demographic trends of population ageing and technologization as well as the challenges and opportunities that they bring to societies. Digital technologies can potentially contribute to the well-being and quality of life, prolong and facilitate ageing in place, assist with physical and mental impairments, and, on the other hand, technology nonuse or lower use can be detrimental and lead to exclusion. The positive impact of technologies depends on the success and effectiveness of the design and its implementation, which are phenomena for interdisciplinary examination. This book is a unique integration of multiple fields including computer science, social sciences, engineering, and architecture, united together in an attempt to produce multisided knowledge on designing and tailoring the innovative digital devices, robots, websites, and services to the diverse needs and aspirations of older adults.

(Katz and Calasanti 2015; Rubinstein and de Medeiros 2015). Наметить концептуальные линии в поиске смыслов возраста с точки зрения различных перспектив призвана работа «Aging and Human Nature: Perspectives from Philosophical, Theological, and Historical Anthropology» – сборник под редакцией Марка Шведы, Михаэля Корса и Клаудии Боццаро.

(King 2016; King, Almack, and Jones 2019; McRuer 2006; Pickard 2018; Shakespeare 2014; Westwood 2016; Westwood and Price 2016). Несмотря на гораздо большее количество зарубежных работ, книга Джейн Гэллоп «Sexuality, Disability, and Aging: Queer Temporalities of the Phallus» стала одним из первых изданий, полностью посвященных вопросам, возникающим на стыке негетеронормативной сексуальности, старения и инвалидности.

  12. Книга Торбьерна Билдтгарда и Питера Оберга «Intimacy and Ageing: New Relationships in Later Life» вышла в 2017 году в серии «Ageing in a Global Context», которую Policy Press издает совместно с Британским обществом геронтологии.

  13. Do you sometimes think ahead and try to prepare for old age, or are you afraid of getting old and thus do not want to contemplate this stage of life? If you belong to the first group of people, Elderly Population in Modern Russia: Between Work, Education and Health might be of interest to you. Otherwise, rather than reading this book, you might be better off looking for the next antiaging remedy. There is considerable academic and practical demand for research on aging driven not only by questions of continued physical functioning in older age but also by concerns about sustainable sociocultural development of the aging society in its entirety and the aging individual in it. This book provides a sociological approach to rethinking the meaning of old age and different manifestations of older people’s relationship with society, such as age policy, old-age social exclusion, ageist attitudes, accumulated inequality during the life course, and so on.
